I’d love to get a panel of Gawker commenters together to have a hopefully rational, respectful, and logical discussion of some issues. Just to find out which ones are actually as insane in person as they are online, which are just allowing the anonymity of the internet to make them into irrational douchebags, and which are legitimately reasonable individuals trying in vain to actually present rational arguments on Gawker.

I have a feeling many people would be far more timid, understanding, rational, and well-behaved in person, because they’d realize they’re total dickfaces online.

There’s nothing cryptic about my comment. It clearly implies that I read some disheartening comments on Gawker, and then came back to Oppo (the only Gawker media site I really enjoy being on) to express my discontent with the general lack of decency and mutual respect found on the internet. Then I found solace in the fact that much of the internet is made up of good things that we all enjoy, like cat and car gifs. The specific article or comments I read are pretty irrelevant to the overall message.

I think it’s a lot like people in cars vs people on a sidewalk. Everyone is invincible and angry behind the wheel but when are face to face are generally much more courteous.

I’m afraid a lot of it is how they actually feel. It’s a positive feedback loop where the worst behavior is promoted with stars and agreeing comments. Rational arguments are either ignored or attacked if they’re in opposition to their uber left views.

Politically I’m moderate and I can often see both sides to arguments and will look for compromise. That or I play devils advocate because I think if you can argue against something you’re actually for you tend to be more knowledgeable on the subject and argue your point better than if you only learn one side.

But, on Gawker I might as well be wearing a confederate flag suit with a thousand guns and bible’s strapped to me compared to the average commenter there.

I wonder if their hyper left leanings will come full circle to where they wind up on the right.

ugh god, i used to have friends like that...

USED TO...

they would go all hard on facebook talking about what a dumbass i am for my post or comment, but then in person they shake my hand and ask how ive been as if they are really interested and dont look at my facebook...

Once they comment something so insanely stupid i just ignore them when i see them in person... I am, online, who i am in person. And some people just cant handle that...
